COMING OUT, IS HARD TO DO…

We all have one, we’ve all been there. Telling our friends and family that first time about who we really are is never easy. The thing about being gay is though, that we are constantly coming out to new people or co-workers as we meet them, something that straight people don’t do, because it is immediately assumed.
Depending on who you are and how your family is, the initial reaction to you finally being public about your sexuality may differ. Some parents may reject the idea and even blame themselves -a more common reaction than one would think-, others may just be relieved that you finally did it and be willing to show support.
My coming out story is nothing too fancy. My father, may he rest in peace, never got to find out as he died before I managed to work up the courage to tell my family. I have many qualities, but tact isn’t one of them; after considering and having played with the idea for a while, I decided to just bluntly say it.  My mother -she was truly unsuspecting about it- didn’t take it very well, the rest of my family however, did and actually came to accept it quite quickly, which helped my mother cope with it -who literally and I’m not lying- cried for days and yes, blamed herself.
Let’s be reminded thought, that no matter how violently your parents may react and face the initial fact, this is who you are and your parents in the end just want your happiness. There’s no good or right way to say it or approach the topic, whatever you think is best and works for your situation might just be what you need. If any of the readers out there has an inspiring or even -why not- funny coming out story, feel free to use the comments section; I’d love to hear about yours and I have no doubt that it will sure give a few people in need of help, perspective.
And remember that no matter what people say, there’s nothing wrong with being gay: “Homosexuality is god’s way of insuring that the truly gifted aren’t burdened with children”  Sam Austin
