Sex and Second Life

GROWING PAINS

I have seen many links recently announcing and advertising LLs ongoing “evolution” campaign, and I often reflect like many of us, upon the fact on how Einstein was right and time IS relative; or am I the only one that has noticed that SLT does move different?
Things in SL move at a different pace and speed than in RL. You can achieve (and lose) things a lot faster than it would normally take you and the minimal investment factor does help too. As soon as you have a somewhat decent looking avatar and find your SL niche, you start making speedy progress through socializing; unless you are the logging for sex type, then you are pretty much served with the occasional “one log stand” and a hot looking avi.
But as soon as you become a SL father, your priorities shift. Much like in RL, you find yourself doing things for them, trying to set a good example and making sure they are happy and like many parents… creating a perfect copy of yourself to follow in your footsteps .
But it seldom works that way. I was discussing with my best friend today our parental issues (mine are very minimal, I have to admit my son is not really a handful) and how sometimes their choices make us parents cringe. We want them to like the things we like, do the things we do, occupy their in-world time around us, but then looking back at my own SL evolution and not really having a parental figure until I was well on my way; I HAD to make my own choices and follow my own path and learn from my mistakes (I still do by the way, each day is a constant learning experience), so I have come let my son do his own thing and advice WHEN asked.
Simply put, we all want company, friendship, a bond that unites us in SL and makes us log in. Some want to give advice, others want to bring their relationships to a new level, but most of us simply want to fulfil those needs we have in RL that circumstances, for one reason or another won’t allow us to pursue.
Of all the things I occupy my time in SL, I have to admit that parenting has been and still is the most rewarding experience, and one I am constantly learning from. Growing up in RL and SL (and in my case and those around my RL age is more about growing old now) can bring pain, but we all have a path to follow; walking that path a bit less alone does make the journey a lot easier.
