Sex and Second Life

Disclosure

On the virtual world, full disclosure means to make available to the public the vulnerabilities present in any platform or program, including details of the vulnerability and how to detect and exploit it. The theory behind full disclosure is that releasing vulnerability information immediately results in quicker fixes and better security.

In real life and Second life as well, privacy is key and not until very recently, Linden labs agreed to include the revealing of real life information as a direct violation of its Terms of Service -you know those, the long disclaimer you get with every program and that very few bother reading-.

Users being able to use anyone’s real life info in any sort of way or fashion and with a variety of trinkets was a major security issue that took the company too long to fix. I got approached by one person today bright and early -yes it seems I get all of the weirdos- that decided it was a good idea to “expose” a person I don’t even know by sharing a picture and some real life info about this user that I found irrelevant and of no use, but which got him promptly reported. Some people don’t mind sharing their info, but I firmly believe this should be an individual choice, not anyone else’s.

Security is the keyword here, being able to feel safe, this being using Facebook, twitter or Second life, as a user you need to KNOW that the only person handling, using or disclosing your information is you and the company whose TOS you have agreed to abide by when first joining.
