#SOSVENEZUELA

sosvenezuelaToday I figured I’d use my time to create awareness about something happening in south America, that truly affects us all as a whole and is the unsettling political and civil unrest in Venezuela, a country I was privileged to live in for a while during its golden years, when you could make a living out of honest work, find food in the shops and your only concern was on what to do with your weekend or which beach nearby go to; but then the cost of life started to increase and people slowly got poorer and poorer and in an attempt to change things around for the best, someone who shouldn’t have been given power got elected and changed the way the entire country functioned, for the worse.

Fifteen years later shortly after his death, his successor got elected by what most consider the result of vote rigging and then things turned even worse; sometime around January a group of students decided to start a peaceful protest and one of them got killed by the military police -who should have not used forced on a peaceful protest to begin with- and that’s where the entire country got organised and has been trying to overthrow the government with almost daily street manifestations; however people disappear, are imprisoned or are found murdered days later on an almost daily basis and the entire world seems to have turned a blind eye.

Human rights are being violated and what these people want is something you and I take for granted: to make an honest living, to be able to find food in the shops or go out clubbing or on a holiday with your family without fearing for your life. This was -and still can be- an amazing country to visit or even live at, the weather is perfect all year round and their people are goodhearted and open minded -everyone will become your friend within minutes of talking to you and even invite you for a barbecue if there is one happening-, it truly breaks my heart that nothing is being done to help them and those who are able to help look the other way, their silence being fed with free oil coming from the oppressing and murderous government.

So please spread the word around, use the hashtag #sosvenezuela whenever you see a piece of news that is relevant, the more pressure and awareness we create as a whole, the faster will this come to an end. My support goes to the brave people of Venezuela.
