Gossip Girl is the title of a fairly popular TV show, that if you are unfamiliar with, starts from the premise of an anonymous person making every sordid detail of a certain social circle public, hence causing drama and a number of plot twists that are sure to leave you entertained. I am not a follower nor a fan of the show but those who do watch it constantly insist that I do, and with the little information I have about it -and the extra research I did-, I found the whole premise and a recent issue I faced -and have many times before- having a lot in common.
Even after my few but well lived years in second life -and the many to come I hope-, I am still surprised on how some people’s minds work and granted, second life could be defined as basically a chat room on steroids, so the transmission of information is one of the main things we do, apart from engaging in a wide variety of leisure activities and side businesses to explore our creative limits; I have however, befriended and trusted so many people in these past 4 years, confided in many and have been nothing but bitch-slapped -pardon my french- for placing my trust and secrets in the wrong hands, so this time around after my comeback, I have decided to keep mostly to myself and my loved ones, seeing if that would change anything.
A thing I do -almost as a habit now- is to tell my partner in SL everything, trying my best to keep our relationship as transparent and fluid as possible, same goes with my two sons, having experienced the worst of human nature -specially when it comes to gossip- I am not really in the mood anymore for surprises, so anything I do, I make sure they find out about it from me first, so whatever information arrives to them, has already been explained and divulged by its original source -namely me-
One thing I keep asking myself though, is why is it that people you call “friends” and even those you trust on some level, decide to become your spokesperson and run as soon as they have the chance, to repeat anything you have done or said, with their own original twist. Some would think these friends simply mean well and others would stress the fact that most information is bound to become viral anyhow, but I have been and will most likely be the receptacle of a wide variety of information that either people who trust me or family members decide to tell me, either for advice or just to get this off their chest and I have never, not in the most extreme of circumstances decided it was appropriate for me to repeat anything that was discussed -it is entirely your business and your life anyhow-.
Back in the day when I was teaching University classes, I had the chance to go to a seminar covering something called “post-social history”, where the guest speaker defended the theory that history as we know it is subjective and not entirely objective as we would like to believe and all information passed on from person to person is done so from their perspective, no matter how accurate they try to be; this is also true when it comes to gossip, so be as it may I have learned that anything I do or say needs to be repeated to those I love and are close to me, hence saving me the grief and drama later.
Never mind the reasons, if you are trusted with information, see someone one of your friends is related to in any way, doing something you would consider odd, be a sport and either keep it to yourself or confront the person about it, before you go off telling whatever it is you think you saw or heard, gossip only benefits one person, and that would be the person spreading the info around, no one else.
