Sex and Second Life

Skin

When it comes to SL and your avatar, what number of things define you as your main identity? what factors serve to outline what feels like home and what doesn’t? I’ve heard a good number of people admit they have an alt -for the SL neophytes, that is the name given to an alternate account- and truth be told anyone saying they do not have one is like men saying they don’t like porn, it’s simply put a lie; we can make an alt for a variety of reasons, in my particular case most of my alts are brainless bots that would model for my shop, but my main alt -the one I haven’t used in a big long while and just recently updated-, initially served the purpose of being a way to escape a very ugly situation during a very difficult time of my SL, until things calmed down.

One of the things I have never fully experienced during my time in SL however, has been to fully explore the platform as somebody else other than Spike, sure there was that one time way back, but even then my close friends and family knew it was me, just under a different skin, so I was still referred to and approached in private as me. In my opinion, one can never “SL wrong” or start over with a new identity, you are still you and that privilege is negated to people in life, generally speaking. People would debate this point of view with me however, saying that you are able and more than capable to start from scratch under a new identity in SL and make it look insultingly easy, but my question still remained, why make the switch and become somebody else?

This is until I decided to dust off my alt and take him for a spin during one of these dead quiet mornings, and then I got it. Everything was fresh and new, even the old places and people I knew under my main account addressed me under a very different light and something quite interesting happened, flirting; even though I have put a lot of effort into Spike and the overall look always trying to keep it fresh and easy to the eye, people have stopped casually flirting with me -sure there is the occasional guy here and there but I am 90% of the time contacted about business stuff I am linked to or general family stuff-; so I made my way to a couple of clubs and beaches and the experience was quite different, so it was interesting to see SL under a different perspective.

Does this mean that as an alt you are pretending to be somebody else? I know people that do, but I am still me, just with a different skin and a different name, making my way with some extra experiences and a quieter more selective list of friends, and no unlike some people -whose personal choice I respect- I am not planning on switching to this shinier version of me, it just provides a number of different things I cannot enjoy as Spike -random totally anonymous sex with no repercussions or collaterals being one of them-

Whatever might be the reason why you alt, keep in mind that there are people behind the avatars, people with feelings that can get easily involved and invested in your new persona; unless you are honest about it all and don’t try and keep two separate lives. Even under my alt, the people I call my friends and add on that list are also on Spike, it’s just quieter in there. So the golden rule here is have an alt if you wish, just be honest about it.
