Sex and Second Life

The Monogamists

MonogamyMonogamy is what we would define in the real world as our ultimate objective as human beings, finding that perfect someone to share our hopes and dreams with and hopefully indulge in routine sex without ever getting bored of it, as it will be shared in that marital bliss with the person of our dreams; reality however can be rather harsh and perfection for some will not always be the same and will vary depending of the couple and their expectations as individuals.

When it comes to SL however, most seem to agree that monogamy is almost unattainable and those who attempt to engage in monogamous relationships are fools, and sadly the statistics seem to prove everyone right; I think the key here is not only the many varied options that are offered to us when it comes to exploring our sexuality in second life -personally speaking I seldom indulge in cruising anymore as I find it dull-, but also how limited our relationships can get to be. There are many things we lack in a relationship in SL, no matter how intense and true our feelings are, those things aren’t there and people do not seem to be ready to “cope” with the lack of these.

There’s lack of timing -as in time zones and trying to get organised around work schedules and inworld time-, no physical contact and the subliminal but ever present idea that second life is built for our entertainment, something that we keep in the back of our heads at all times, so our enjoyment and pleasure will always be prime. We all have tried at some point or another to have a meaningful, long standing monogamous relationship in SL and for some reason or another it always seems to crash and burn sooner or later.

I asked around while gathering info for this article about personal experiences with monogamy in SL, trying to see if those couple did still exist and whilst in one, if people behaved differently, shared common interests or interacted with different circles, and the answer always seemed to be the same, we really do not change our habits, and that may be the number one issue with monogamy in second life, the lack of interest in committing to a particular person -and even those who do, end up introducing a third person at some point, something that seemed to be trendy for a while-

The trick about a long term relationship is to find a common ground, I would not define Hiro and myself as a conventional monogamous couple -we do like to have our options wide open and we always comment about what we have done and who we have done it with- and however we explore and develop our relationship, it seems to work for us because at the end of the day we have a solid friendship upon which we have based our “open marriage” and that makes everything else work.

With time I have found myself less and less drawn to explore and see what’s out there, but I do like to have that option of being able to do so without any guilt and I know he does too, but at the end of the day it is nice to know that despite there being 1000 different options out there, you can always count on one, and maybe that what true monogamy is all about.
