Amnesia

The Noob

Amnesia (from Greek ἀμνησία from ἀ- meaning “without” and μνήμη memory) is a deficit in memory caused by brain damage, disease, or psychological trauma. Amnesia can also be caused temporarily by the use of various sedatives and hypnotic drugs; essentially, amnesia is loss of memory. That is of course the official and simple definition offered by websters and wikipedia but memory loss and selective memory can have a wide spectrum of side effects, all depending on the individual and who chooses to remember what and when, so reality is always of course, like all things, subjective.

The same thing could be said about our first weeks as noobs -this the preferred term for any new user in a game or virtual platform-, we all experienced it, no matter how long ago this was and how distant and unlike our present self this may seem -and even though I often joke on how I was simply rezzed fabulous and awesome, that is far from the truth- the facts are there, even if most people would like to pretend this never happened or exercise a very unhealthy selective memory, we all went through it.

And as time goes by and our experience accumulates and we become better and wiser, we seem to desperately run and hide from that fact and even refuse help to new users or say we just don’t have the time or patience to deal with them, but as game standards go, second life is the less new user friendly platform and these are faced with a complex interface, hostile users who refuse to provide help or plainly just ignore them -I have a friend in RL who literally stopped playing after a few days because of that last fact- or lack of information regarding noob friendly zones on which to receive guidance and support -this outside of bloodlines which simply thrives and literally feeds off of them-.

I’ve heard people go to the lengths of saying that they have no interest in making new acquaintances, using this as an excuse but then “make friends” with those who are convenient or appropriate, depending on the chosen field they have decided to explore their talents in, something that I particularly find hypocritical, but preaching and pointing fingers is far from my intention today with this post; I seriously don’t go around fetching noobs and helping them, but if I run into one I do try my best to teach them a thing or two and even advice on which are the best places to get quality freebies, with no strings attached.

Why? because I stumbled around SL for a good number of weeks until someone actually took the time to teach me a few essentials and I would not be the person I am today if it wasn’t for that initial nudge we all received from an altruistic somebody, my name is Spike Clemenceau-Silent and although I am no longer a noob, I was once one and that is a fact I always keep present, specially when faced with my past, don’t let your ego get the best of you.
