The Ice Bucket challenge (and other comings and goings)

Ice BucketOver the past month or so when I have not been able to post anything, I was currently switching desktops while trying to juggle my RL and SL activities, whilst trying to ensure that the transition was smooth, but rather than boring you with the details and engaging in a long winded apology, I will get right to it and cover the topic at hand.

A lot has happened over the past few weeks, many things worth mentioning and others not so much but as always trying my best to learn from it all and hence becoming an updated -and better- version of myself as time goes by. One of the things I’ve done as of late is experiencing a different side and crowds of SL in one of my ALTS -that is alternate accounts to your main one- trying my best to get a fresher look and perspective now that my kids are grown and busy with other things.

Whilst Clubbing with my husband this morning -as usual-, I got dragged into a discussion about the infamous ALS ice bucket challenge, which seems to have gone beyond viral, and how some people think is not really helping and it should stop; detractors don’t seem to quite understand the purpose or point behind social platforms -Facebook, Twitter and so on- and that is the spreading of information as quickly and far-reaching as possible, the point of the challenge itself is not of making a change, but of creating awareness over a unknown -up until recently- disability that is affecting and will affect a large number of people, change does not come from social platforms, a hungry kid in Africa or with leukemia will not get better just because you liked or shared a post, but your post is sharing the information with others, which you believe is relevant.

Information and words can help others and you may not even know the effect your words or actions may have on others, and that is something I was made aware of quite recently. A close friend of mine was going through a rough time in life -to the point of being homeless and unemployed- and was struggling to find her path while people around her tried to sympathize and encourage her, something I did not do; see I am not the pat in the back type of person, I am blunt, outspoken and opinionated and those who love me have come to like that about me, and apparently my words to her “stop complaining and do something about it, since no one will do it for you”, was just the right kick she needed to get her out of that black hole -something she thanked me for recently-

So people doing the Ice Bucket challenge are not doing it to make a change, but hoping that the little that they do makes a difference in someone’s life or makes someone aware of the issue, hopefully someone who can help. So here comes my little nudge to help the cause and as I post this on FB, I will be nominating people as well.

You can be the change in others, even when you don’t mean to.
