Sex and Second Life

Cheap

price tagMy father always said that one should value the people you are surrounded by according to their actions, since they not only were more arduous and meaningful, but would always show you a person’s true nature; anyone -he insisted- could fill a void with talk and words, but if their actions did not follow up, their talk was meaningless and simply put, cheap.

Despite the fact I run from change as a cat avoids water, my life does tend to change quite a bit and I have found myself starting from scratch in more than one occasion, this is a true fact whether I am referring to SL or RL, but change seems to be a bit more obvious and dramatic when it is concerned to SL, where everything happens a lot faster and for some unknown reason, time simply moves differently.

One thing we have in SL -and a lot of it- are words, we communicate using them 90 % of the time and interpreting inflections and nuances taken from granted in regular communication requires some extra skill in a text based platform, so it is not strange that half of what you say is misunderstood and taken the wrong way, hence the reason why I have always trusted and placed my love and loyalty following people’s actions in SL rather than their words.

Talk is cheap and with backspace available, you can carefully measure your words and make sure that the other person hears -or in this case reads- exactly what you believe they want to, but at the end of the day actions will always have the final say, the rest are just words, word and excuses; anyone willing to talk to you will open an IM and do exactly that, a friend wanting to hang and spend quality time with you will make time and that special someone that you have a major crush for but seems lukewarm, probably doesn’t feel as strongly as their words say -I remember having this exact conversation with one of my sons about a guy he liked- because anyone interested in taking you the extra mile, will make sure their actions show and you do not have a shadow of a doubt.

So whether this refers to friends, lovers or acquaintances never sell yourself cheap by trusting words void of meaning, because remember that words and promises are free, following up on those promises, that’s where true value is shown.
