A friend once referred to this phenomena we all are affected by as the “hate train” which is simply explained as the impulse of hating someone or something by mere association; take for example an “enemy” of one of your closest friends, someone you don’t really know nor have ever spoken to, but you irrationally hate them, simply because they already have that hate stigma and the more people get reference from you and your circle, the more join this hate train… “all aboard!”
It has always struck me as odd as how, when it comes to the human species, we have so many difficulties getting along or accepting people’s errors, we pride in how we have overcome our primal instincts and are rational about our choices -hate being one of them-; the odd thing about hate however, is that we are not born from hate or even logically inclined to, we are taught and led into it.
Recently I stumbled upon a news piece, where a baptist minister instructed his crowd to not only hate homosexuals, but -according to the bible- the christian thing to do was to put them to death -no, I am seriously not making this up- The pastor, Robby Gallaty, told the church-goers that discrimination against gays should never stop, and that death is the only way to punish those who are “infected” with sin:
“God said that the sins of the people had infected the very land in which they live. So what happens to people who engage in this activity, this sexual immoral activity? Go to Leviticus 20, God gives us the punishment for engaging in these sins… ‘If a man sleeps with a man as with a woman, they have both committed a detestable thing. They must be put to death. And their blood is on their own hands.” and he carries on stressing a few points people make about previous hate and segregation according to race as comparable to sexual orientation “Here’s the problem with the argument that you closed-minded Christians, one day you’re going to come full circle, and you’re going to realize that you’re being judgmental just like racism was 50 years ago. And we finally realized that racism was an issue for Christians. And now you guys have repented and come full circle, and you’re going to realize that you’re as foolish as we were with the movement of racism,. It’s not the same… A black man can’t change his race, a white man can’t change his race, a homosexual can stop engaging in homosexual acts. See, sexuality is a choice. Gender and race are not.” Below the actual video so you can see for yourself.
Here is where that argument is invalid though, hate IS a choice, sexual conduct IS a choice… sexual orientation however is not; the difference between the two is the fact that sexual orientation is something we are BORN with, sexual conduct is what we do with it and who we CHOOSE to act upon our sexuality -which as proven by my SL experience it can surprise you on how many things you can actually be turned on by or be comfortable with-
I guess that commandment “thou shall not kill” does not ring a bell for that “Christian” pastor; I will carry on with my life trying to be a better person as I get older, making my best effort on not hating something or someone just because I was told to or it is expected of me.
At least unlike the “peace loving” mega church moocher above -who is most likely banking off the brainless-, I will strive to accept people for what they are, and not what others expect them to be
