Fallen: Gender Exclusion in SL Fashion

One of the things SL has in abundance is fashion; a lot of it and there are always ongoing events throughout the year, from gatcha to fundraisers, to not only spread the word around on new releases, but to keep all second life citizens well dressed. I have lost track of the number of friends that consider themselves openly shopaholics, and truth be told in SL it is very easy to indulge in a shopping frenzy, and there is always a content creator trying to break ground and leave their mark in the fashion world -thus becoming the next trend-.

Over the past few months we have had quite a few events, all themed and centered to either fund-raise for a disease or disability, or just because it is a repeated yearly occasion; one thing that seems to be happening more and more however, is the fact that male centered fashion, accessories and hair seem to be almost non existent -in the Steam-punk event I counted 3 outfits- and the more events seem to be happening the less things for men seem to be released, -and the ongoing fantasy event seems to be no better-.

This whole thing kind of brings me back to the Male Fashion week, where women openly voiced their discontent on the fact that women had “nothing to go for or shop during the event”; I do get the fact that women do spend more money on clothes and fashion as a whole, hence making them a preferred target audience for content creators, but this makes me wonder where is male fashion headed towards and has certainly put me off from even showing up at events, unless there is something I really want to get my hands on.

Women fashion seems to be booming and expanding rapidly and everything, from mesh bodies to accessories seem to be released for them first, which leaves us men who appreciate and love fashion and staying trendy with or three or four creators of choice we love and trust and the men fashion department (TMD) which is slowly but surely also shifting to include women, releasing “unisex” everything.

As a content creator myself and to all content creators out there, here’s a piece of advice: men spend money too, if what you are releasing is affordable and quality and I speak on behalf of all men out there, gay and straight alike saying that much like Lucifer in the picture, we seem to have fallen from Fashion Grace, just for the small fact that we have the wrong gender.

Thanks for the info Ralphie! My point being however that there seems to be more focus towards female fashion and a lot less on men. I remember not more than three years ago things were quite different, and not only you had grid-wide events that TRIED to be inclusive, but hunts and so much more, it seems that now people can’t just be bothered
