It Gets Better

AngelPain and suffering is part of life, from the minute we are born from pain until we die, life is nothing but a complete succession of experiences on which we learn to dodge, avoid and grow from pain, but sometimes it can be too much and caused not by circumstances but people whose sole intention is to displace their own suffering and fears, by inflicting pain on others, doesn’t really sound fair, but we’ve all done it at least once in our lives.

When we are young and full of insecurities, you do not have the emotional maturity to handle such attacks, so we sometimes lash out by isolating ourselves, take it out on our family members and in the most extreme cases, take our own lives -or at least entertain the idea-, as suicide is an easy and comfortable escape. I am not ashamed to admit that during my teens I did all of the above, suicide being one of the things I contemplated quite often, but never did have the nerve to discuss it with anyone or actually do it, and I am glad I didn’t, as I would have deprived myself of so many valuable life experiences that have enriched me as an individual and a human being.

At the end of the day, every person is an individual, different, unique and deserving of being treated with respect for who they are and it’s about time that we put our personal issues aside and teach future generations that some of their peers are gay or transsexual and that is perfectly fine and normal as we are all different and not really in control on how we are born.

My only hope as a blogger, a parent and an adult is that my small effort to send the message out there will reach someone in need of encouraging words and a fresh perspective; I grew up with Aspergers while trying to cope with being gay, trust me it doesn’t get any more confusing and dark than that and I made it, I survived, I learned to deal with what I thought were my “issues” and it did get better, but it only did when I came to embrace who I was and make no apologies for who I am or what I think.

I know it gets better because I was you once, we all were and there are thousands of people out there who seeked helped, who dealt with attacks in several ways and you do have the marvelous advantage of social networks and finding a shoulder to lean on or someone to guide you through the really difficult times from the comfort of your home and enjoying total anonymity if that is what you need. It sure got better for Laverne Cox and she is not only an amazing actress but an incredible woman.

If you are a parent or a teacher, do not stand idly by or turn your back of LGTB bullying, speak up, take action and join the thousands of voices who reassure our youth that it certainly does get better. It is very easy and the first step is just a click away. http://www.itgetsbetter.org/
