“Why” is an English adverb which is used at the beginning of a sentence to inquire about the cause, reason of purpose behind something, this is at least the English entomology behind the word and its uses, but its existential connotations cover a wider range than that and it is something we make use during difficult situations or when trying to find direction when we have none.
We seldom make a stop and try to make sense of our surroundings, our nature or daily happenings unless we are lost or facing despair, but lately as things seem to have finally found some balance, both in my RL and my secondlife, I have suddenly found myself asking this very question and wondering if people tend to get existential, when things are going well as well.
The first thing I stopped to wonder about was my blog, why do I write? Why do I feel an impulse to put my thoughts and feelings into words?, the answer presented itself quite clearly, I do so because it helps me find footing, it gives me perspective and as I have learned over the years, it also helps others who read me and are facing or have faced similar situations; I certainly do not write to get praise or attention -and still surprises me to have followers-, but I do respect people who keep a blog for such purpose, we all have our own reasons that drive us to our destination.
Then I looked around our beloved virtual world and asked myself, why do people have big muscled avatars?, why do men decided to have a penis the size of a third leg? Why are there Furries, She-males or T-boys? Why do women oversize their breasts or decide to have a wide gap between their legs that would fit a school bus?, simply because they can and in virtual worlds not only do we overcompensate for things we don’t have or can’t achieve in RL -either emotional or physical- but the sky is the limit.
When it comes to people loved and lost -lovers and loved friends alike-, I find myself asking quite often recently the reason behind some simply removing you from their lives, Why am I no longer wanted? Why is it that people you thought would be around you until the end of days, simply make a point to make you see you are no longer welcome in their lives -even by words or omission of them-?, then the old adage comes to mind, you can see the face and hear the words, but can rarely see the heart. Some people simply see you as the dentist, you are only needed when there is a problem that needs to be fixed urgently, but when things are going well, there is simply no room for you.
I have come to a point in my life when the balance and peace I have fought for so long, has only been achieved by learning to benefit from everything life throws at you and turning my back from anything that will not make me a better man, parent or spouse; you don’t like me? that’s fine, I have made a point to no longer hate anyone, wish everyone the best and carry own minding my own business.
So never mind anyone else’s reasons for doing what they do and acting the way they do, focus on what you want and don’t get too focused on receiving acceptance or praise, in the end the only person you need to please -and the only one who will answer your existential questions- is none other than yourself.
