I remember not so long ago and what it seems was only yesterday, the only way people had of robbing you was at gunpoint or with a very elaborate scheme which always involved a uniform and someone impersonating either the phone company or any other utilities, but as technology evolves we seem to have more ways to not only allow people into our lives but also our homes, without trespassing or breaking and entering being involved.

The world wide web has allowed us to not only have instant access to limitless amounts of information, but has changed the way we think, shop and socialize; online dating being the most popular way of meeting a special someone, opposed to clubbing which comes in a close second. This change in our habits will most likely also alter the way our brains function, making mid-term memory an ability no longer needed by our brain.

Safety online, specially when it comes to creating passwords and encrypting your payment information is essential as a lot of damage can be done on your name and with your money, without you being able to do anything about it, or only becoming aware when it is too late. Secondlife sadly is no stranger to hackers or scammers, copybotting -copying an original creation and making it look like you are the creator- and phishing has affected all levels of creation, from fashion to photography, flickr itself having seen its fair share of copyright infringement drama among its users.

So what can we do to exercise caution and make our experience online not only safe but more enjoyable? Here are a few common sense and useful tips:

A. Never click on any links sent to you either by a friend on IM or email, hackers have many ways of pretending to be someone and building pages from your most commonly used sites that are almost identical from the original, except for the url, always triple check the link and if it doesn’t look safe don’t click it

B. Be always aware of the TOS of your trusted companies online and sites, most will clearly state that they will never contact you by either email or phone. Knowledge is power and it is in the knowing where you can always be one step ahead from scammers and hackers.

C. Try and compile a number of passwords that include capitals, a symbol and numbers not related to your date of birth, the longer it is, the harder it will be for any hacker to “guess” your password. Sometimes removing vowels from a sentence easy to remember and replacing them with symbols is a good way to start -example: “I Love Fridays” !l@v3Fr1d4ys-

With these easy to remember and useful tips, you can ensure that you are not a victim of the ingrowing Online Mafia, which is simply the same old thieves, only smarter and what’s worse, now invisible.
