We Remember

WW1

Modeled by Ryusuke Obayashi

A number of years ago, I packed my things and decided to move to the UK and see what it had to offer, or better yet if I would be able to not only like it, but mingle; a good number of things confused me at first, remembrance day being one of them.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of World War 1 and since I have always believed that information is power, I decided to read up on the holiday and the symbolism behind the red poppies.

The red poppies bloomed and blossomed across the battlefields, their brilliant red color becoming a symbol of the blood spilled in war and of remembrance day -marked on the 7th of November when an armistice was signed to end the armed conflicts-

One thing that eventually compelled me to get serious and write this article was one which I read at the BBC News site. I was specially touched by the fact that there were children as young as 14 fighting for our freedom in the trenches, children that at the time saw enlisting as the only way out of poverty, unemployment and in some sense become heroes.

It is estimated that over 250 thousand underage soldiers enlisted and at the time many people didn’t have birth certificates, so it was simple to lie about your age if you fit the height and weight requirements; in most cases despite this fact it was very obvious some of them were not 19 -the minimum age requirement- but as a recruiter, if you were paid a hefty bounty for each person that enlisted, some rules were bent and even ignored.

The article above has some powerful letters excerpts sent by some of these soldiers from the trenches, some of which survived and made it back home, others who weren’t that lucky and died fighting a war they didn’t quite understand.

This article is dedicated not only to our veterans, but to their families; We will never forget.
