Gratitude

DawnOf all the American holidays that I miss living abroad and I think should be widely accepted, thanksgiving is truly on top of my list; it is a simple opportunity to gather your family, without any presents or celebrations involved, have a big meal and reflect on all of the things you are grateful for, giving thanks for them.

Since I have many things to be grateful for, as a parent, a husband and a friend, I decided to get into the spirit of the holiday and list the good number of things I am thankful for -which I already went over my head a few times during my thanksgiving dinner-; it is by no means a traditional one, but it is all things that have led me to the point where I am now.

I give thanks for the friendships I have made over the years, I won’t take the time to name names as the people who matter and are an important know who they are, but it has taught me the difference between good friends and people who simply call themselves that; good friends stick around through thick and thin, not because they have to be by your side but simply because they want to, being exposed to both bad friends -and the hurt and heartache you experience when you realize it was not all you thought it was- and good friends makes me be appreciative of the good one, so I do give thanks for all of them.

I am thankful that all of my previous relationships didn’t work, I am even more grateful that at times I wondered if I would ever find a person that was just right for me, I am thankful for the pain and suffering all of these people put me through, because it has taught me how to be a good husband in a solid and long term relationship based solely and purely in a good friendship, I get to marry my best friend, how many people get to say that?

I am finally thankful for all of those who doubted me, who tried to discourage me from doing things I am passionate about, because every time someone came up to me and said “don’t even try doing that, you are no good” it simply pushed my mindset forward into proving them wrong and I would be missing out on so many things if I had paid attention to their words, but not only that, everything they said also pushed me to not only be good but try and be as good as I could, just to show it was possible.

I am thankful for everything in my life, the good and the bad because it has brought me to the point in my life where I truly feel I have found balance.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone, I hope you had a good one
