Sex and Second Life

Artificial Intelligence

AIIt has been a lifelong dream, ever since we developed the technology capable to create “thinking” algorithms to engage in complex or life endagering tasks to be able to one day, replicate intelligent life in our own image.

So far we have successfully managed to create intelligent programs capable of translating languages in real time, drive cars and planes -mostly known as drones- or store maps and guide us using GPS; with the recent leap in technology and advances in this field, Professor Stephen Hawking, in an interview with BBC, warned that AI could potentially end mankind.

But the ethical issues arisen by the incorrect use of AI, was nothing but a theoretical posibility, until Google’s recent purchase of “DeepMind”, he and others still see ethical issues around the technology in its current state. Google, which bought the British AI firm “DeepMind” earlier this year, has gone as far as setting up an ethics committee to examine such issues.

The whole question of the use of artificial intelligence in warfare has been addressed this week in a report by two Oxford academics. In a paper called Robo-Wars: The Regulation of Robotic Weapons, they call for guidelines on the use of such weapons in 21st Century warfare.

Prof Hawking says the primitive forms of artificial intelligence developed so far have already proved very useful, but he fears the consequences of creating something that can match or surpass humans: “It would take off on its own, and re-design itself at an ever increasing rate,” he said, “Humans, who are limited by slow biological evolution, couldn’t compete, and would be superseded.”

Even if this may still seem like science fiction to us, it would not hurt anyone to start paving the way for an early control of AI, its evolution and uses and SL is no exception, as we have increasingly experienced in the past few years, intelligent prims that can avoid obstacles and breedable humanoids and animals that can perform various tasks unsupervised.
