The Gods of SL

Roman dreamsOver my many years in SL, I have had the pleasure, misfortune and privilege -all depending on who- of working with a wide array of people from all around the globe from all walks of life and varied backgrounds but one thing that has stayed true with all is the degree of seriousness invested in SL as a lifestyle, because no matter how it is marketed and presented to users, I for one will not be one of those who sees SL as a game, it really isn’t.

SL as a virtual world has given me so much, and I have learned over the years to pace its usage and combine it successfully with a very active RL, I have also learned to have fun with it and to not take anything too seriously, after all I am investing my spare time to be with those I call friends and my virtual family -I am the proud parent of three boys I have come to love as my RL sons-

As I was talking to one of my newest friends yesterday, the topic of trying to “fit in” with the “popular” crowds, this either being the gay scene, the club scene or the fashion world, we both agreed that after a while it’s easiest to stop trying and bang your own drum, life is simpler and you are in the long run, happier, but this is not always the case with some people who have either money or resources invested in SL and it’s their main source of income -this was my case for a while- and a reduced group it’s what I have come to refer to as the “Gods of SL”

They feel they are entitled to special treatment when either talking to others, being talked to or even working on your venue and come with a long ridiculous list of demands which always made me chuckle, I have even heard a few utter the infamous phrase “do you know who I am?”; to which I always wonder… do you? Being popular and successful in SL is like being good at monopoly, even if you are playing with real money, it does not alter the fact that it is at the end of the day monopoly.

I really don’t care if you are miss SL universe, the king of real estate or the hottest and most sought after DJ the platform has ever seen and it does not make much of a difference how many “avi awards” you have received and have listed on your profile -this avi awards thing did cause quite a stir on FB and other forums back when it happened-; if you are doing things in SL for money, provide a good service and expect nothing but the fee for your creations, if you are a DJ do it for fun and you will see how people will simply come to you and this can be applied to so many areas, if you do things for praise, recognition or approval, you are doing it all for the wrong reasons

But that’s just me
