New year, same old me

Spike 2015So another year has come and gone and we start the long and painful process of recovering from the holiday excess, either financially, physically or even both while making resolutions to improve ourselves in the coming year with the good old premise “this year will have a whole new me”, we either promise to get in shape, switch jobs or learn a new language, but very few of these things ever see the month of February.

Personally the only thing I enjoy about New years is the celebrational spirit most people indulge in, it seems to be the only time of the year where the entire planet joins in a common goal, without any disputes, arguments or fighting over what it is supposed to be done or who’s done it better, each country or region celebrates in their own particular tradition and there is no wrong way about it.

When it comes to changes and resolutions, as a Buddhist I am bound by the knowledge of impermanence, a principle that teaches us that everything is in a constant state of change and once you come to accept this and see it as something normal, you learn to flow with it and change and / or improve if needed or when necessary.

Change can be scary and imposing if we are trying to hold onto things we do not wish to part from, your kids will grow and leave, your looks will fade, you will most likely gain weight or lose hair and there is very little you can do about it; the new year is simply a succession of months that give you the same amount of opportunities to indulge into change you had half a year ago.

Happy New Year to all of you out there, from the same old me -with a mesh body now-
