License to Troll

Bond StreetAfter a short and well deserved break, on which I indulged in every holiday tradition there was and after the great news of having made the cover of SLGoth magazine this weekend, I decided as I regularly do on Sunday morning, while sipping my coffee, to browse through social networks and news-feeds to try and catch up with as much as possible before going back to my usual routine on Monday and I stumbled upon a very disturbing post on Facebook about a woman who wished to become paraplegic.

Chloe Jennings-White made headlines about a year ago –here’s a flashback-, when making her wish public of trying to convince a doctor to sever the nerves of her spine; Chloe has been diagnosed with Body Integrity Identity Disorder – a rare psychological condition that makes sufferers want to be disabled, but instead of getting help she has been trying to come up with the money needed for her surgery, and in the meanwhile lives as a disabled person does.

Of course this has given ground for her to become an internet meme for a while and she eventually made it to my wall this morning, reposted by a friend. Now there’s the regular user who sees the post, reposts it and moves on, there’s the few who comment on it, both in fascination or horror and exchange point of views with other people and then there’s the troll. Internet trolls are very smart creatures, usually educated men or women who have just decided to elicit a response from unsuspecting victims using either loopholes in syntax, grammar and there’s also a group of them who simply attack upfront with no fear of censorship.

Before going any further with the story, I must stress the fact that I regard mental illnesses as serious as the physical ones, but society has somehow trivialized these, thinking that with some of them you simply can just “walk it off” and nothing is farther from the truth: depression, ADD, bipolar syndrome, personality disorders, autism, and even body integrity disorder are very real and people struggle with them on a daily basis and in some very severe cases if untreated can lead to premature death, mental disorders are no joking matter and the sufferer is not really in control, despite what people may think -the same as if you had a broken bone or a brain tumor-.

Now the troll I faced this morning was one of my contacts -no longer on my list obviously- who decided to compare this woman’s predicament with gender identity, I assumed him as a gay man himself would know better than to make such a statement, but that is trolls for you and this time I decided to voice my opinion and draw the line on what I found was permissible and what was not. The sentence in question was “I have heard of men and women who claim to be of a different gender” or something along those lines, which resulted in a long winded argument about the right use of the word.

I happen to be not only a writer but an English teacher in RL, so I am very familiar not only with the language but how it should be used, saying that someone claims something is to simply assert a fact without proof, and I am sorry but when it comes to gender identity -which also applies to sexual orientation- one does not claim something, one simply is, end of story. At this point I am fully aware I should not have fed the troll -one never should, causing a response and drama whilst drawing attention to themselves is what they are looking for- but in some cases, you have to speak your mind and defend those minorities who are going through enough, to also have to tolerate the close mindedness of some who decide to turn them into jokes.

But that’s just me

Awesome post, though I have to disagree with you calling trolls intelligent. I’ve met plenty in SL as well as on Facebook. They cannot be too smart when they operate exactly the same way in a near textbook manner and when they cannot see that trolling will never fix their shitty lives or the deep rooted issues that exist within them. Troll and intelligent is never something that should go together in my opinion. When I think of trolls. I think of pathetic.

Apreciatte the feedback and comment, and yes I think there are all types of trolls but in general they are just sad. Thanks for reading!
