Twelve people, 10 journalists and two policemen, were killed, and 10 others wounded in the shooting massacre at the Paris headquarters of satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo yesterday. Three of the wounded are in critical condition and a country wide manhunt is already underway, the shows of support, protests and shock have united many and there are many who wonder how religious freedom and murdering people to defend your beliefs can be really justified by some.
The BBC rushed to report the news and a lengthy follow-up but refused to repost the satiric cartoons that started the whole thing, and I guess they may have a point in not wanting to get unwanted attention or even diverting it from what really matters, reporting the facts and helping shine a light into the events. Having a French ethnic background myself, this one hits too close to home and I cannot help but join the million of voices who are showing support to “Charlie Hebdo”
Reddit has already ignited in protest and there is even an artist who promises to draw Muhammad every day for the next year, which has turned this into a trending topic; there might not be much that we all can do as bloggers, artists and writers worldwide, but to show our support and condemn this blatant and hideous act against freedom of speech.
How fragile is your faith and religion if you must resort to taking human lives due to satire? Are you so brainwashed by your faith and beliefs that it suddenly justifies murdering? and this sadly applies to all fundamentalists worldwide, nothing ever will support the fact that your extreme view on your faith alienates and rejects others who don’t think like you or even agree with you.
My husband and I were discussing the shootings today and the idea of banning religion was thrown around but I do not think that’s a solution, that would be considered a reaction; I have met very devout and kind people who are respectful of others while abiding the laws preached by their faith, religion is like a penis someone once said, and it is about time we stop shoving ours around people’s faces or justifying hate or ignorance based on this fact alone.
