Losing my religion

religionThe shootings in France have both shaken the world and have made religion and devotion a trending topic, giving way to a debate on whether extreme devotion and lack of it can both be justified and coexist; is it really possible? Why is it that a passionate position defending your system of beliefs is considered extremist but the total opposite is regarded as normal? Is society as a whole evolving into a more secular space, where there will be simply no room for faith?

The reason why I have been pondering these questions today is the non-stop streaming of religion related news and anything involving the manhunt happening in France coming from the self proclaimed spoke-persons on both sides; as an artist, a writer and an individual I cannot help but defend Charlie Hebdo’s position when it comes to artistic expression and freedom of speech, no matter how controversial it may be, but I must say that in a country and more so a city as culturally diverse as Paris, publishing a satire depicting Muhammad naked and in all fours might have been a bit too much.

Having been raised in an European family, both Spanish and French, everything around us and related to our up-bringing was involved with the Catholic Church, that until I was old enough to make up my own mind and choose my own system of beliefs, which led me to Buddhism, something we’d like to think of as more of a lifestyle than a “religion” per-se. My husband does not have a particular system of beliefs and I could safely say that he could be considered agnostic, although respectful and supportive of what I practice at home.

Let me stress the fact that I am in no way debating the fact that either religions are wrong, or lack thereof as well, not even in any way justifying the shootings in any way form or fashion -I still strongly feel that any form of life is valuable and precious and no one gets to decide when it should end-, those were cowardly and heinous acts that should be penalized with the full force of the law, but to be able to coexist more peacefully, one should learn to be respectful of what others believe and how their system of beliefs is showcased or depicted.

My thoughts and prayers do go out to all of the families involved in the shootings, I hope that in time these wounds will heal and we all come to honor the memory of the artists who lost their lives fighting for what they believed was freedom of speech, as controversial as it might have been; all of us as human beings also have a right -or at least we all should- to voice our opinion without any fear of retribution, but we all may learn something from all of this and that is the fact that sometimes it is best to exercise caution, since all extremes are bad.
