The Bieber bulge

spike undiesAbout a week ago I was surprised with Calvin Klein’s choice of model for their new campaign, it namely being Justin Bieber; one thing their staff knows how to do is to style a photoshoot to make anyone look hot or appealing, enhancing their sexuality and by collateral, sell more underwear. I am assuming that even though Justin might not be popular among young boys his age, he is among girls and when it comes to fashion, girls are always the target audience, so there is some undeniable logic behind it.

The pictures were hot and I must admit he looked good -a little too good considering he’s 20ish-, so we all assumed naturally that there had been some amount of photoshop involved, I mean seriously, have you ever met a 20 year old that looks like that?, but then since the Biebes himself is a major douche who has earned by own merit a large following of haters and detractors, someone actually took the time to “leak” what they claimed were the real pictures before they had been photoshopped.

The alleged before and after

I seriously have to admire the person who actually took the time to photoshop the actual picture in reverse and I am in no way saying that the released pictures were not photoshopped to some extent -it is common practice in fashion nowadays and I must stress the fact that when it comes to shoots you do not only have the post editing as a resource, but the appropriate light can make something look bigger and more pronounced-, but if you examine the “real” picture closely, the large and pronounced shadow on his leg where the bulge should be, is a dead give away.

Personally I do not care how big his junk is, makes no difference to me whatsoever and the anatomy of the “before” version actually fits more the size standards of any realistically sized 20 year old out there, what has brought me to write this post is the horrendous body shame campaign people have taken to indulge in, just because it happens to be Justin Bieber. These new times where everyone has internet access, has given way to making everyone behind a screen a judge and executor of their own laws and perspective on life, somehow making a wrong right just because you have a large support base of people agreeing with you.

Body shaming is wrong, it does not make a difference to me whether you think you are in the right or in the wrong for doing what you do, but making people feel bad about their bodies -and sending a message that thin boys are feminine, or with a small penis- harms not only the person you are attacking, but a large number of silent and anonymous boys behind the screen who happen to be listening.

We live in times where everyone is fighting for equality, but have constantly advertising and fashion feeding us old time beauty standards that do not apply to this generation or the next; women are expected to be thin and delicate with large breasts and men are on the opposite range, expected to be large and put on muscle, hence creating a new generation of potential anorexics and exercise addicts trying to achieve a beauty standard that is unrealistic. I for one count myself in the group of designers, writers and photographers who agree with the petition of having photoshopped pictures come with a logo or a disclaimer -much like tobacco does now-, informing our youth that what they are looking at is not real.

People come in all shapes and sizes, I think is about time we all start realizing that this fact alone is more true than any photoshop ad out there, these pictures are like Superman in a sense, just because he can fly, does not mean you should go and jump out a window and try it yourself.
