50 Shades of Pixel

50 Shades of PixelI first heard of 50 shades of Grey back in 2012 when it was first published in hardback, having made the transfer from an e-book format to being officially published by an editorial, with the logical succession of two more books after becoming a best seller in a very short time; I distinctly recall female relatives and friends swarming to the bookshops to get a copy or borrowing it from a friend after a very long winded and heated recommendation, as if it were the greatest work of literature since “El Quixote”, with the added passing comment along the lines of “If only he was real”

I pictured the story to be something along the lines of “Sex in the city”, highlighting the female power over sex and their own sexuality with the added bonus of the male counterpart being rich and handsome. Years went by and it got made into a movie, with the added further exposure, making it yet again a trending topic and with the repeated effect of women swarming to the movie theaters in a frenzy, to get a front row seat watching the beloved characters of their wet dreams come to life in the big screen.

I was quite shocked and dissapointed after finding out what the storyline is all about, a college graduate virgin, seduced by a millionaire with a fetish for hard sex and BDSM and dominant / submissive relationships. Christian of course jumps at the chance of taking Ana’s virginity and what follows is a succession of very graphic depictions of their “relationship” -bound by a contract she previously signed- where the over controlling Christian decides what she does, where she does it and even what she eats and despite she refuses to do a number of things with a clear “No” he ignores it and carries on.

The thing I found most surprising of all is that the same group of hardcore feminists, who claim want to be treated equally and cause a ruckus in social media -and I am aware I may make a few frown with this statement-, crave for a sick twisted individual of the likes of Christian Grey -who would be portrayed as a clinic case in Criminal Minds if it weren’t for the fact he has a truckload of money- to take control and force them into submission.

This clearly reminded me of Doms and Subs in SL, where the dominant party parades and exhibits his “pet” as a trophy and some even go to the extents of collecting and selling human beings in auctions as if they were a precious piece of furniture they no longer have use for; It is very clear to me the dynamics behind BDSM and Dominant/Submissive relationships and some subs even excuse their lifestyle by adducing that no matter how submissive you are, you are still in control, by simply giving it away and that the leash does have two ends -I have heard it all in my few years in SL trying to figure out why some people choose this as a mean of not only sexual gratification, but as a way to live-.

With all of this said and with my point made, I do hold respect for true subs who live it and breathe it, because they choose to, at every moment of their lives -even though I do despise Doms with a heated dislike-, above and beyond “Feminists” who want to bake the cake and eat it too -namely wanting equality on the one hand and wanting to be forced into hardcore sex on the other-. I am sorry but you truly can’t have it both ways, anything other than that has a name and that’s hypocrisy, a double set of values and standards that are really not compatible.

Do you know what would be really considered equality by my standards? if you turn Ana into an Andrew and have a couple of gay men relive the plot, achieving the same success, without it being considered porn, which is what 50 shades is all about, porn for “Feminists” -with a touch of permissive domestic abuse-.

Yeah but in your case you know where to draw the line and where one begins and one ends… my issue is with the hypocrites out there… like the “good christian” who goes to church then turns around and fucks kids or worse… you can’t go around being the poster child of feminism barating and insulting men then swoon on how great Christian Grey is…

For me the point of being a feminist is that a woman can do or be anything she wants…a housewife, a domestic slave or a a CEO of the biggest fortune 500 company in the world. She can sleep around or stay a virgin til marriage. she can bottle or breast feed her child. and we can do it while getting equal pay, equal rights. without shaming each other.
