Sex and Second Life

Apocalypse Now

Apocalypse nowAs we make our way through the first 3 months of 2015 -3 months already dear Lord time flies- and with my 5th anniversary in SL creeping around the corner, I decided to look back on my path inside our beloved virtual world and ponder on what is in store for us in the months/years ahead; my time in SL has been a long and winding road of accomplishments, drama, tears and joys and a long list of things I truly don’t regret as it has not only given me a chance to be a parent in SL, but I have become a better person in RL, learning a lot about myself in the process.

When I first meet someone in SL, I am always inquisitive and curious about two facts, your name choice and the main reason for having joined, it can tell a lot about your character and there is always a very interesting story behind both; in my personal case Spike was my cat’s name, who passed away a couple of months before I considered joining SL -no, sorry to burst your bubble, it is not after the Buffy character- and not really knowing how it would shape my next 5 years or even that I would be around this long, it seemed like a fine choice at the time.

Socializing was always complex and an area I struggled with, so it was advised I tried a virtual world such as SL or any other choices available, and after having dabbled with IMVU for a few, I made the jump to SL; I have been a Vampire, a Lycan, A King, a Count in the French Court of Versailles, I have run many successful businesses that helped me through particularly difficult financial times in RL and now that my life has started to finally come together, I am enjoying a more quiet time in here, devoting my time to photography and writing -two things I am simply in love with-, since now that I am so busy in RL with work and such, the last thing I want is to come to SL during my free time and “work” some more.

This week, with some free time on my hands and after having dealt with some unavoidable drama, I also took time to humor my husband and indulge in some Gacha for the first time at the Arcade -a trend I am not particularly in favor of- and must have been beginner’s luck as I got my hands in some rares shown in the picture from RO; as I was putting the outfit together and thinking of a good picture for it to be depicted at, it made me wonder about the apocalyptic times we are living in SL and how Linden Labs plans on making the Exodus from existing users to their new project -namely SL2- without losing a large member base who will not agree to start from scratch without any backwards compatibility -that is without our inventories-

Change is something I do not welcome easily as a rule, but is an unavoidable and intrinsic part of life, everything flows and changes and to keep up you need to welcome it and go with it, or you are doomed to being left behind or in the case of SL and anything internet based, outdated. As for SL2 I am playing that one by ear and keeping my ear in the ground for any fresh updates on the subject from LLs and will take it from there, we are running in technology and servers that are around 11 years old, so it will be fascinating to see what they can come up with with what is available nowadays.

And if the Exodus proves to be a failure and marks the end of our time in SL, I will count my blessings and move forward, because for better or for worse, my time in SL has been a good one.
