Dear “Feminist”

BreakfastAfter a long and busy week in RL, I came home and proceeded to indulge in my weekend routines, which usually starts with some serious catching up of all social networks out there and stumbled upon one of my Facebook contacts ranting about how tired she was of “feminists” having a problem with Meghan Trainor’s latest video “Dear Future Husband”

The video in question depicts what is clearly a parody of married life and the role of females in it, the song is bubbly and contagious and clearly states several times how she cannot be expected to be a housewife, since she doesn’t fit the role -not with those exact words but the idea is there-; regardless of this fact and the artistic license the artist is on her very right to use as she pleases to convey the concept a large number of internet “Feminists” have taken it upon themselves to define the video and song as “degrading” among many other adjectives as such.

Let’s put a few things straight when it comes to the true role of feminism and equality, explained as clearly and plainly as possible; true feminists fight for equality, which is not to be confused with wishing to turn women into men, or blurring the gender line; equality means equal pay, same opportunities regardless of gender, creed or sexual orientation, true feminism and those fighting for equality out there for other minorities simply want those things mentioned above, gay men and women don’t want to be married in a church, they simply want their civil rights and unions to be recognized by the government and a true feminist does not wish to become a man or be superior to them, but to have the right to choose to live their lives as they see fit, this being becoming an astronaut or a housewife and it not being a big deal, freedom to choose, end of story.

At the end of the day I defend the role of true equality, which means the right to choose your life as you see fit without anything about you making a distinction from everyone else, and I do believe that men are men and women will always have a distinct role, which doesn’t necessarily mean that by simply treating a woman like “a lady” you are making her out to be a fragile being, that is inferior to you, but simply empowering her gender role, the same as the amazonian types that will take control and refuse to “fit” a predetermined feminine role or stay at home husbands and so on, equality is about choice, not roles.

It is fine for men to act like men and women to act like women as long as it is YOUR choice and not everyone else’s, that my “Feminist” friends, is what true equality is all about, so if Meghan Trainor chooses to make a video that is indeed a parody of traditional gender roles -or any other artist for that matter- and you get all worked up about it, the ones in the wrong are you, not her.
