Words…

WindowI don’t usually take part on trends and fads, but I do keep track of Strawberry Singh’s blog and her monday meme this week somehow “spoke” to me in a personal and close way, so I decided to take some time today and not only include a picture -as I always do, choosing a window with broken glass as a connecting idea to the damage cyber bullying can cause to a person- somehow related to the topic, but to openly discuss my personal experience with cyber bullying.

Meme instructions: Answer the following questions either on your own blog or on any social platform.

1. Have you ever been subjected to mean comments online by strangers? If not, then skip to question #5. Being Autistic and interacting with other people who are not on a daily basis, can always lead at some point or another to some harsh name calling, specially if people don’t know exactly where is it that you are coming from, so yes indeed, more often than not I have been on the receiving end of insults

2. How did you respond to them? it all depends on the context and the moment it happens, I used to get very confrontational about this, but as you get old, you learn that mute and delete are most definitely your friends, ignoring someone who has a clear intention of causing a reaction, for the sake of trolling removes the power from their hands.

3. How did they make you feel? Upset, confused… again it all depends on where the insults come from, if they are coming from a complete stranger, I simply just roll my eyes and carry on with my day, words after all only have power if you give it to them.

4. Can you share some of the mean comments you’ve received and your thoughts on them? In SL alone I could go on for days on the number of things said to me, some justified others not so much, but a recurrent one would be “Robot” and all of its variants “heartless robot“, “souless freak” and so on; I understand that to the uneducated eye a person with my condition may seem cold and distant, but this is simply due to the fact that our feelings are so much more intense, it is just easier learning to bottle them up and carry on with your day.

5. Have you ever ridiculed or negatively commented on someone else’s work, actions or personality with the intention to hurt them? My actions are usually a reaction and despite my best wishes of being nice and kind hearted to others, there have been some occasions -specially during my first year in SL- where some people have been on the receiving end of insults and name calling; when it comes to people’s posts and work online I rather always keep an open mind and if I feel my comment will not be constructive -or regarded as such- I prefer to keep my opinion to myself.

In short and to end this post quoting a friend’s post “a little kindness goes a long way“, we have enough grief and drama in the world to actually invest our free time on the internet to abuse anonymity by spreading negativity, remember that the mean words you utter today can turn around and be aimed at you at any moment, specially when you least expect it, after all Karma is a bitch.

Well, if my words inspire at least one person is well worth the time spent
