Sex and Second Life

Fragile

golden yearsThese past few days a thought has been roaming around my head, as these usually do, this time focused on the frailty of those things we love and cling to and the effect of change upon them when it happens, because no matter how much we try to stop it or deny it, time changes things and this is inevitable.

One of the things that make SL so alluring is the advantage of having an avatar that ends up feeling like an extension of yourself, which doesn’t age or grow old but undergoes a series of updates to stay trendy and try to keep up with the times, as if living in an eternal fountain of youth; it is under this concept and second reality where we exploit our talents, profit from our creativity and create bonds with the family we choose.

But no matter how unalterable it may seem, like all things in life -even more so in the case of SL- it is subjected to the concept of impermanence, and those thing we hold dear and precious are usually the most fragile; today in my daily musings I decided to age my picture to see how I would look if the natural course of life affected my avatar as well -I kind of look like my mum in RL-, I do try to update it as often as possible, to at least showcase on “Spike” an evolution of sorts.

Ageing is a topic rarely covered or addressed in SL, but what if our avatars were able to age and showcase our “age”?, some of the benefits on this would be that we would be able to naturally relate to our same age group, finding common topics of interest, much like Goths, Cyberpunks and Furries are naturally drawn to each other; we’d have middle aged communities, teen hangout spots and so on, unlike the current state of things, where everyone -saved a few exceptions like twinks and so on- seem to be in their mid twenties-early thirties -myself included-

What if such system was implemented and we could choose to age in SL? would you choose to? I might, because despite our biggest efforts to avoid ageing in SL, it happens in RL and there is no “avatar death” per-se, but we as users will inevitably die, our personal circumstances might change and so on and it is in that frailty and its denial where the illusion of secondlife and virtual living comes to play and works so well.

What are your thoughts? would you choose to age if given the choice?

    Interesting articles, both, well written.

Until folks shift away from the principal that Youth is God, then the only way that Aging would be considered in SL for the majority is if there was a game made of it (as Becky suggested) with rewards in Linden Dollars/valued goods. Now that way it would become a ‘done thing’ and nobody would have to give themselves away as to their RL age or touchy things like that because they would just say… Oh, I’m playing the Aging Game for cash/goods (and I’m really 22 give or take 30 years). SL is and has always been complete fantasy for the majority of us and I’m sorry to say that it indulges all the egotistical parts of ourselves to the Nth degree. And I’m no better than anyone else. I enjoy the fact that you can look permanently young and roleplay any age 🙂

Thanks for your input! I don’t know, I think in some areas it would be benefitial, I feel there will come a point in my journey that having a perfect skin will feel silly and not like me at all
