Sex and Second Life

Mafia

MafiaA sense of belonging, of being a part of a larger something, relating to like-minded individuals is one of the things we first look for when we join SL, after the noob “blindness” has faded and we have managed to wrap our head around the system and where everything is; as time goes by and we become more experienced we strive to exploit our talents, either compensating by those things we are unable to achieve in RL or by making use of those skill we already have to make some extra income, others in the long run simply look for fame and fortune -if that is even possible on here-, always thirsty for some form of appraisal and reassurance.

One of the things, in my personal case which have kept me around SL for this long, is its sense of community, the bonds we create with the family we choose and how it inevitably affects all aspects of our RL, no matter how “separate” we try and keep them, it does nonetheless; eventually as if it were a form of a virtual “highschool” we split into groups, mostly searching for that sense of belonging and community, the geeks, the wiccans, the LGTB, the fashion groupies, the bitchy queens, the goths, the twinks and so on, sometimes hopping from group to group until we finally settle.

Some groups we are inevitably and instantly added to due to our lifestyle, and in my personal case it’s been the LGTB community in SL. My involvement in the community has always been distant, mostly keeping to myself, especially after the electoral drama that unfolds in a certain organisation that claims to “represent” us all, but is mostly led by men -seriously I have enough drama of my own as it is- said organisation which I will not name has slowly and surely evolved into some form of Mafia, openly trashing and abusing those who don’t necessarily agree with them or drink their “kool aid”

The main reason I am taking the time to bring this up is the fact that recently I came across a blog post where someone I know was not only publicly shamed, but some personal facts I am sure he shared back in the day with what he believed were a group of friends in confidence, were also made public, and to make things even better, a person from said organisation -who is entitled to his own opinion of course- decided not only to applaud such behavior but to reshare this as well. Now, it doesn’t matter what sort of drama you all are involved in, if you are a integral part of an organisation that is supposed to represent a community and you take the time to openly and publicly shame a person who also belonged to said organisation, it simply makes you look like mobsters, starting from the simple principle of “agree with us or we will end you”, and this is mainly why i will never be a part of -not even remotely- said organisation.

Be always reminded that the one person the LGBT community has to be thankful for in SL, would be Fabrice Snook, a man nothing short of a saint, who was not only terminally ill and not once complained about it, but used literally his last breath to bring us advances recognized by LL, such as the Gay archipelago and the now extinct Gay World News, to name a few. He worked in the shadows, not once looking for appraisal or approval, but simply wanting to leave something behind that we could all profit from and enjoy, that is work that I will forever be thankful for; leave the Mafia practice to the pros and the Sopranos kids, and learn to play along or share, it is a big SL after all.

A big thank to my long time friend and sister Belladona Wexhome for the inspiration. Go check out her fabulous blog here.
