Of Gods and Monsters

MedusaA number of days ago, I stumbled upon something that I found both ironic and for very specific reasons I can’t seem to be able to get off my head, which is simply the set of double standards some people in SL tend to indulge in rather easily and most of the times without even flinching; to make a long story short this involved someone praising the fact that two openly transgender models have made it to a runway and a magazine cover in RL, female and male respectively.

The thing that bothered me however, about the whole situation is that said person is in front of an organisation that openly discriminates in-world against transgender individuals, and if you wonder if such thing exists, it really does, virtual worlds are the best breeding ground for men and women who don’t quite identify with their genre in RL and find in SL the perfect outlet for experiencing life as they want it to be.

But that is just the thing, in the words of my good friend Bailey -openly transgender in SL and an active part of the London Sim community-, being transgender in SL is extremely difficult, since there are a number of things you won’t be able to take part of, or being recognized as a woman, you can’t be a model, or take part in a pageant and there is a long list of things that will require that you provide proof of being a woman in RL.

I may be in the wrong here, but some of these standards used to filter the “real women” from the “fake” ones are in direct violation of LLs Terms of Service and forcing anyone to provide proof of their gender or disclose any type of information in this regard does exactly that; maybe the new times ahead of us will bring a fresh outlook, more open minded individuals and a more welcoming fashion industry that wants to first and foremost cater to women -regardless if you are a real one or not- should be inclusive, not exclusive.

But then again this discrimination might be the direct result of a sector managed and controlled by “Gods” who are in fact just monsters, might help if we start behaving like humans and become more accepting of others, it is SL after all.

I actually am a woman in RL and SL…and I find it very offensive every time I’m asked to “prove” it in SL. I refuse to do so. The age verification I understand, but the gender verification is just pointless and humiliating. I wouldn’t submit to such degradation in RL, and I won’t do it in SL.

My point exactly! If you wish to celebrate womanhood with a pageant or event it really should not matter who is behind the avatar, but the overall presentation perse, I’ve always thought the whole thing is ridiculous
