Money for nothing

RainWhat is your time worth? can we really put a price on time?, some would debate on this for a while, one supporting the idea that our jobs and careers -and even those who devote time to exploit a craft in SL- provide us with that necessary evil money has become and which indeed puts a price on any usable second we have -which by de-facto implies that time does have a price- and the other with a clear concept that time is not a usable good, something that can be traded, purchased, stored or given away.

Are there really things in life that we can put a price on? does money really ensure happiness? can friends, love and relationships be bought? After my yearly time away, where I took the time to reflect on my past, present and future I came back to my routines finding that nothing much had changed -despite SL time having the habit of moving rather quickly-  and indeed I stumbled upon an argument on FB -which seems to be the “it” place for any arguments, discussions and a true focal point for drama, where ideas are exchanged, paths lain and bonds dissolved as easily as some change clothes.

I won’t elaborate on the fact itself -that would be indulging into gossip- but let’s just say that this in fact had feminists and the rest of the world facing each other -as it so happens often recently-, the argument started by a friend dedicating time and money into courting a girl, only to be faced with a solid no, when an invitation to move things along on a “real” date was offered; harsh words such as “rape culture” among other things were thrown out there, which of course had me thinking on the topic for a few days.

I am openly not a feminist, I am an “equalist” -if such term exists- which simply means I do no support the idea that either group or gender is entitled to any special treatment due to their god-given condition and that we all are at the end of the day, just human beings trying to survive this thing we all call living; the conclusion I came to was very simple, anyone accepting gifts or attention as part of courting, indulging in the experience as long as it is simply safe and convenient for them, it is leading the other person on and should indeed be held accountable, the same thing principle can be applied to friends who are only around whenever it suits them -you know the type, the ones that only remember you exist when they are alone-, those who promise one thing only to do another when something better for them comes along.

We are all adults and we should all be able to have some discerning power to be able to see these type of people coming a mile away -specially in SL- but in life all things, good and bad define who we are, shape our characters and are learning experiences, so today the friend who wronged you and the girl / guy who took advantage of you will simply be yet another thing you have learned from because like the  old song said you get you “Money for nothin’ and your chicks for free”

We enter all things in life after all, willingly and we can leave them behind with the same spirit.
