Equality

DawnSix months ago I was lucky enough to marry my soulmate, my life companion and in short my best friend, in a very intimate and special ceremony that gathered a few closed SL relatives, who witnessed our relationship progress into what ended with a marriage; this celebration in SL was not the first of its kind and had served for many years as an outlet for many out there, who did not have a right to marry whomever they chose in RL but could still do so in SL.

Even though marriage equality has been a reality in the UK where I live for many years now and for a while as well in some parts of the US, it still bothered me that in the majority of the US you were expected to hold and respect equal civil rights, except marriage. The U.S. is now the 21st country to legalize same-sex marriage nationwide, including territories. Married same-sex couples will now enjoy the same legal rights and benefits as married heterosexual couples nationwide and will be recognized on official documents such as birth and death certificates.

Michigan, Kentucky, Ohio, and Tennessee define marriage as a union between one man and one woman. The petitioners, 14 same-sex couples and two men whose same-sex partners are deceased, filed suits in Federal District Courts in their home States, claiming that respondent state officials violate the Fourteenth Amendment by denying them the right to marry or to have marriages lawfully performed in another State given full recognition. Each District Court ruled in petitioners’ favor, but the Sixth Circuit consolidated the cases and reversed. The Fourteenth Amendment requires a State to license a marriage between two people of the same sex and to recognize a marriage between two people of the same sex when their marriage was lawfully licensed and performed out-of-State

Hundreds of same-sex marriage supporters flooded the plaza and sidewalk in front of the Court to celebrate the ruling, proudly waving rainbow flags and banners with the Human Rights Campaign’s equal sign, which have come to represent the gay rights movement. In an emotional moment, the supporters sang the National Anthem, clapping wildly after singing that the U.S. is “the land of the free.” In SL there has been a non-stop celebratory movement going from club to club that will most likely go on for the rest of the weekend.

I am glad that I get to experience history in the making, as I am sure this will serve as a stepping stone for many other countries to follow its example, after all we don’t seek to take away your rights, we simply want to have the same.
