The pursuit of happiness

Midsummer dreamHappiness, as defined by the online websters it’s a “gladness or joy is a mental or emotional state of well-being defined by positive or pleasant emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy. A variety of biological, psychological, religious and philosophical approaches have striven to define happiness and identify its sources”, we all want it, to some degree or another and will seek at least to be content until the day we die; achieving happiness is a complex task when you count yourself among the many, that much as myself, have decided to make time for secondlife as well.

We are all drawn to the grid for a wide variety of reasons, but at the end of the road the ultimate goal is simple, happiness, the most sought out and plentiful resource on the planet; the trick behind it however is that the idea of it and means to achieve it may vary from person to person, so once’s idea of happiness can mean misery and torture for another one and in the grid some are happy pretending to be sick, or starting drama and so on.

As a Buddhist I have learned that one cannot simply magically achieve happiness, despite the fact that we all deserve it and are entitled to it, there’s always a degree of unhappiness one has to embrace in order to fully appreciate bliss, enjoying the subtle nuances of it and taking pleasure on the simple moments, whether this might be having a fun time with friends, taking a holiday or finally finding your niche; recent events had made me question how real happiness is in SL, what percentage of what makes us truly happy in SL is real and which is user created?

Being in SL is like walking through wonderland, or being in a dream-like state while fully aware you are dreaming, you can change everything -quite literally- and not only do you have full control over your appearance, but also can choose your own name and how involved you decided to get in a business or pleasure, the one thing we can’t control is our social interaction, the people we hang out with and decide to entrust with part of our happiness.

I certainly and most definitely do not hold the secret for it, far from it and my journey has still a way from being over, but what little I have learned from it is the fact that one cannot place our bliss in any objects, sure a brand new computer, a bigger house and that latest piece of tech might be nice, but those things will break down, get old or need to be replaced along the line, happiness cannot be limited or placed in the hands of others, because despite the fact I do love my friends, husband and family , they will all leave at some point in your life along the way -embracing change on the same degree as one would the reality of unhappiness is key-

The true potential of it lies within yourself, finding pleasure in those things that make you happy, but being fully aware each moment, thing and person is fleeting is key -a lot has been said over the past few days over change and people’s refusal to admit it-; personally I have invested many years in projects or venues that have made -directly or indirectly- people happy, I take pleasure in knowing this and going back to them when nostalgia kicks in, enjoying now a more secluded and quieter phase, spending time with my loved ones and undertaking projects that really hold my interest.

Is there a secret recipe for happiness that would work for everybody? possibly not, but remember that the thing that really matters is the journey, not the destination.
