Sex and Second Life

Privilege

privilegeDuring Feudal Japan -circa 10th to 12th century-, the Samurai became a powerful military force which enjoyed a series of privileges and hard training from childhood and were trained to self-discipline and sense of duty, together with the contempt for material goods and fear, the refusal of the pain and especially death.

For the duration of the need for them in ancient times, they were the only class allowed to wear katanas in public and could execute any commoner they so chose if they regarded they have been treated or addressed with disrespect, when peace arrived and there was no longer any active need for them, these privileges were abolished, but still to this day, some of their teachings are still applied in modern Japan; the Samurai finally came to an end after hundreds of years of enjoyment of their status, their powers, and their ability to shape the government of Japan.

During my few years in SL, -5 years and a half- I have engaged in many ventures, most times due to need others out of sheer curiosity and much like the Samurai, I have seen a lot of people come into “power”, many trends come and go and many lifestyles that once affected the fold of SL as a whole, be considered a thing of the past; see unlike royalty and higher classes that shape societies and actual history, people in SL only change the world around them and its immediate vicinity -which makes sense in an user-based platform-, so it still rings as funny when people are expected to be treated with some sort of privilege just because they believe to be something other than what they really are.

At the end of the day, it really doesn’t matter if you have met governor linden or if you are close friends with Ebbe Altberg, Linden Lab’s newest CEO – must I point out on how awesome his surname is by the way, ALTberg?- unless you are truly enjoying some sort of special treatment that separates you from the rest of the users, you are no more and no less than the next guy and should not be expecting to have rules bent for you just because you are under some wrong delusion that these don’t apply to you.

Back in my day, when I owned and ran Club 7, I lost count on the number of times a hot up and coming DJ would come up to me with a long list of divaISH requests just so you would be allowed the honor of having them “perform” at your venue -and the “do you know who I am?” if you didn’t, simply never got old- and truth be told this is the one thing I have seen transferred to all fields in SL, fashion, content creators, publishing and so on and have often found that it is always the most talented ones that are truly humble.

I am sorry if this rings true to you, I do not mean to offend anyone or ruffle any feathers, but these things work very straightforwardly, not only in SL but in RL as well: if you are always late in paying rent, you have to expect to be evicted at some point and it is in no way a personal attack to you, it is strictly business, one that your inworld landlord must keep running with your tier, if you violate a working contract by divulging confidential information, not showing up on time -or at all- without a valid explanation, expect most likely to be fired and have your contract terminated.

It really doesn’t matter who you think you are or what other people tell you, there are no “special privileges” when it comes to SL, which is in fact a true reflection of RL, so some people once and for all should stop expecting them and simply, get real, do it for fun, do it for the love of your craft or do it for Scooby Doo if you wish, but do so with love and for others, not expecting anything in return other than the true value of your work.

But then again as I always say, that’s just me
