The Slayer

March 2017 marks the 20th anniversary of Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s first airing, Josh Whedon’s attempt to rescue and revitalize his almost defunct project after being almost eaten by the Hollywood mainstream monster when turned into a movie that did not resemble his original script and made him walk out of it half way through production.

Buffy’s first season originally aired in 1997 with only 12 episodes and it quickly became a popular show and a cult favorite, spanning through 7 seasons and positively influencing a generation when touching a variety of topics whilst following the adventures of Buffy and her friends “the scooby gang”.

The show taught us all to embrace things such as family, either the one you picked or the one you were born with, it showed us that no matter how strong and powerful you were, you were allowed to be insecure, scared and to most of the times doubt your choices; it showed us that it was ok to be gay and that love came in many shapes and forms,

The show took an entire generation and matured with it, characters such as Xander did not go to college and ended up being somewhat successful in his field, Spike refused to let his past define his future and in the end evolved from a villain to a better version of himself, Willow’s coming out and embracing witchcraft helped many teens find footing to be true to themselves; Buffy’s mom’s death reminded us on how life can be unexpected and harsh, Anya’s sacrifice saving humanity showed us how heroes can come from the most unexpected places and in the end, we all grew up and became Giles.

A lot of websites and TV networks have come together to commemorate this 20th anniversary, such as SYFY or Buffy’s Facebook page covering a range of noteworthy events.

In the end, Buffy saved the world… a lot
