The Eight fold Path

So I just started watching Marvel’s Iron Fist, and apart from the yoga-pants-commando-eye-candy (thank you for that Netflix), the slow but steady pace of the show is one that I have come to enjoy, possibly because the story has solid foundations on the Buddha’s teachings, a path I decided to follow a number of years ago and I have never come to regret.

It is actually quite empowering to have a super hero whose power is centered in the eight fold path (which encouraged me to write this post as I feel I don’t cover Buddhism enough on here) and whose story flows from this foundation; here’s a guy who under great stress and grief, finds a noble path that turns him into s hero and despite the fact that following the Buddha’s teachings will possibly never grant me super powers, I find myself being more practical, gentle and centered when it comes to dealing with my day to day.

The Eight fold path is centered in Dukkha (which literally translates as “that which is difficult to bear”), so namely stress, anguish, being unstatisfied or even physical pain and our refusal to accept change can also give rise to Dukkha and accepting impermanence  (one of the three signs of existence) can free yourself from pain.

There is no being that is perfect or unchanging, everyone experiences pain and suffering along their life, so by accepting this and embracing change (which includes aging and dying as natural states of life) it starts one’s path to transformation; with this right thought and attitude you can free your mind of any attachments and let go. The eight fold path eventually leads to Nirvana, perfect enlightenment and happiness but it is not an easy path to follow, think of it as being unplugged from the Matrix, after being dependent of finding your happiness on it, it can be hard to let go to eventually become the super hero you were meant to be.
