Sex and Second Life

It’s the end of the world

This seems to be that time of the year when people decide to end life as they know it and start anew, from the ashes of memories and things postponed, only to find after a short while that the process it’s repeated; according to research, only 10% of adults will commit and finish any of their New years resolutions.

Why do we find it so difficult to pursue and achieve short or long term goals? Some may argue that it is hard breaking bad habits or that relapse it’s simply easier and more comfortable, I personally think that committing to a goal with high expectations sets you up to fail from the start, specially if you expect to get results as soon as possible.

The best option is to start being realistic, be practical and honest with yourself, specially if you are trying to drink less, lose weight or give up smoking, start small and progress from there, you will feel better with every step you take and your accomplishment will be even more meaningful; sharing your goals, plans and progress with a friend or relative can provide you with much needed support, specially at times when you feel like giving up or that the progress you are making is not quantifiable, as it is most likely that your expectations for the next step of your journey are unrealistic and you are not aware of any progress you’ve made.

There is a formula we use at work for any project we start that is time bound called SMART, that is, specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound. Resolution are simply one and the same; anything you decide to change has to be realistic, measured in quantities (either weight lost, or cigarettes you have cut off or measuring your alcohol intake, money saved and so on) in the realm of possibility and with an specific measurable time-frame (for example losing a pant size before the summer)

Following this SMART process you are more likely to achieve any form of success that with any other formula, so why not give it a try, the worst that can happen is that it just takes you longer, but it will be at least the start of something new.
